Enhance Your Chance with the TANs: Tonically Active Neurons Support Learning in the Ventral Striatum

چکیده
The striatum is crucial for the correct learning and control of goal-directed behavior and habitual actions. Here in this issue of Neuron, Atallah et al. (2014) show that both reinforcement-based learning and control parameters are reflected in the neural activity of the ventromedial striatum.

Differences between Dorsal and Ventral Striatum in the Sensitivity of Tonically Active Neurons to Rewarding Events
Within the striatum, cholinergic interneurons, electrophysiologically identified as tonically active neurons (TANs), represent a relatively homogeneous group in terms of their functional properties. They display typical pause in tonic firing in response to rewarding events which are of crucial importance for reinforcement learning. These responses are uniformly distributed throughout the dorsal...
متن کاملPutative Cholinergic Interneurons in the Ventral and Dorsal Regions of the Striatum Have Distinct Roles in a Two Choice Alternative Association Task
The striatum consists of GABAergic projection neurons and various types of interneurons. Despite their relative scarcity, these interneurons play a key role in information processing in the striatum. One such class of interneurons is the cholinergic tonically active neurons (TANs). In the dorsal striatum, TANs are traditionally considered to be responsive to events of motivational significance....
متن کاملNeurons in the Ventral Striatum Exhibit Cell-Type-Specific Representations of Outcome during Learning
The ventromedial striatum (VMS) is a node in circuits underpinning both affect and reinforcement learning. The cellular bases of these functions and especially their potential linkages have been unclear. VMS cholinergic interneurons, however, have been singled out as being related both to affect and to reinforcement-based conditioning, raising the possibility that unique aspects of their signal...
متن کاملErasing the engram: the unlearning of procedural skills.
Huge amounts of money are spent every year on unlearning programs--in drug-treatment facilities, prisons, psychotherapy clinics, and schools. Yet almost all of these programs fail, since recidivism rates are high in each of these fields. Progress on this problem requires a better understanding of the mechanisms that make unlearning so difficult. Much cognitive neuroscience evidence suggests tha...
متن کاملNeuronal synchronization of tonically active neurons in the striatum of normal and parkinsonian primates.
1. Previous studies indicate that tonically active neurons (TANs) are the cholinergic interneurons of the striatum and predict that their activity is synchronized. To test whether TANs do fire synchronously, and whether dopamine depletion affects their synchronization, we recorded the simultaneous activity of several TANs in the putamens of two vervet monkeys before and after 1-methyl-4-phenyl-...
